The batteries of pure electric vehicles produced by legitimate car manufacturers are completely enclosed structures, and even if immersed in water, there is no risk of leakage.





Another point is that batteries in new energy vehicles have extremely high requirements for the purity of the electrolyte, and technically, no external liquid is allowed to enter. Therefore, external water cannot enter the interior of the battery and cause electrical short circuits or other situations that may pose a risk to passengers.






New energy vehicles have very strict waterproof standards



The country has issued official documents regarding the waterproof requirements for electric vehicle battery packs. In the "Safety Requirements and Experimental Methods for Power Batteries Used in Electric Vehicles" released by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China, the safety indicators and relevant experimental methods for batteries and battery modules used in electric vehicles are clearly stipulated.





This standard proposes inspection requirements for single cell batteries and modules soaked in seawater: when the battery is fully charged, immerse it in a 3.5% NaCl solution for 2 hours, immerse the entire solution in the battery, and observe for 1 hour; When the module is fully charged, immerse it in a 3.5% NaCl solution for 2 hours. The solution needs to completely immerse the module and observe for 1 hour.





In addition, there are more detailed regulations on the safety level that lithium-ion power battery packs and systems for electric vehicles need to achieve in the "Safety Requirements and Testing Methods for lithium-ion power battery packs and systems for electric vehicles". One of them includes immersing the lithium-ion power battery pack or battery system in 3.5% NaCL saline water for 2 hours in the vehicle state, and requiring no fire or explosion.





Electric vehicles do not have a problem with short-term wading





So, there is not much problem with electric vehicles wading in water for a short time. If it is a fully qualified vehicle, it can pass smoothly at a wading depth of 20cm or even 30cm.





However, this does not mean that electric vehicles can "travel" freely in the water. When the vehicle is soaked in water for a long time, do not continue to drive. Quickly cut off the power and leave the vehicle. Try not to come into contact with the body metal to avoid electric shock.





In addition, electric vehicle batteries should not be charged immediately after being soaked in rainwater. The vehicle must be left in a ventilated area to dry before charging.
