Understand what EFB and AGM are.

EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) batteries, also known as enhanced flooded batteries, are commonly used in Japanese vehicles. Essentially, EFB batteries are an enhanced version of traditional liquid rich batteries, optimized in design and formulation to enhance discharge capacity and to some extent endow them with deep cycling capability. It is mainly used for Japanese models with relatively few on-board electrical equipment and economical start stop vehicles.




AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are completely innovative products, with product design and manufacturing processes completely different from traditional rich liquid batteries. Its full name is adsorption type glass fiber partition battery, which adopts advanced AGM technology, and the internal electrolyte is firmly adsorbed around the partition without flowing acid. And with advanced pressure control valves to regulate the internal and external air pressure of the battery, AGM batteries usually do not open for exhaust. Compared to traditional batteries, AGM batteries have revolutionary improvements in discharge capacity, charging reception capacity, deep cycling capacity, safety, and are widely used in German and American cars, especially in mid to high-end models.




It is not difficult to see that AGM batteries perform better than EFB batteries. So, which battery is more suitable for starting and stopping? This mainly depends on the original packaging. If your car is originally equipped with an EFB, you can choose to replace it with an EFB battery of the same model. Similarly, if the original packaging is AGM, choose AGM for replacement. Some car owners may feel that the service life of the original EFB is not long enough (such as within two years), so they can consider upgrading the EFB to AGM, which will significantly improve its service life.



However, it should be noted that if your car is originally equipped with AGM, EFB cannot be used for replacement. Because the AGM battery and the original vehicle battery management system (hereinafter referred to as the BMS system) are compatible, and due to the superior performance of the AGM battery, the vehicle BMS system has been equipped with corresponding power consumption strategies. If EFB batteries are used to replace AGM, the EFB will be in an overloaded state for a long time, seriously affecting the battery life. In addition, EFB batteries cannot match the original vehicle BMS system, which can generate fault codes or compatibility issues, leading to safety risks.
