The first appearance of lithium's "physical formation"

Scientists have developed a method for depositing lithium metal on the surface.

Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles have revealed the true shape of lithium for the first time, and the latest findings are expected to help scientists develop lithium metal batteries with better performance than existing lithium-ion batteries, which will also have a significant impact on high-performance energy technology. The relevant research was published in the recently published journal Nature.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are widely used in fields such as smartphones, electric vehicles, and solar and wind energy storage, originating from lithium-metal batteries. Although lithium-metal batteries can store twice as much energy as lithium-ion batteries, their risk of fire or even explosion is much greater, so this technology has not yet been widely adopted.

Lithium metal is prone to react with chemicals, and under normal conditions, when the metal deposits on the electrode surface, corrosion will almost immediately form. In the latest research, scientists have developed a lithium deposition technology to prevent corrosion and found that in the absence of corrosion, lithium atoms form a rhombic dodecahedron. This is the first time that the true shape of lithium has been revealed, which matches theoretical predictions based on metal crystal structure.

The research team stated that the existing lithium coating laying process is based on a technology with a history of over 200 years, where lithium forms microscopic filaments with prominent spikes. In a battery, if two peaks intersect, it may cause a short circuit and trigger an explosion. The true shape of lithium indicates that the explosion risk of lithium-metal batteries can be reduced, as lithium atoms can accumulate in an orderly manner rather than in a crossed form.
